Grace prefers New Year's Eve early: seven or eight o'clock, while the streets of Oud-Zuid are still passable and the heavy fireworks are hours away. By ten the city is harder to cross, and she would rather reach a guest calmly than push through a crowd. She speaks Polish and English, and she is quiet, precise company on a night that becomes anything but.
