Peak dates in Amsterdam: why an event weekend carries a deposit, and how far ahead to book
Five stretches of the Amsterdam year are handled differently when a booking lands on them. The fee stays exactly where it is and so does the arrival window; what moves is the moment half of the money changes hands. This guide explains where the line is drawn and why, then goes through the events one at a time with the lead time each tends to need.
Ask people who have booked on a big Amsterdam date what surprised them and the answer is rarely the price. The price is printed, it is the same in April as in November, and nobody expects a parade to lower it. What surprises them is that a booking which would have been paid at the door on an ordinary weekday arrives, on King's Day or the last night of the year, with a request for half of it in advance. The reasoning behind that request is simple once it is laid out, and knowing it makes the planning easier.
The dates the house names
There are five. King's Day, which is the twenty-seventh of April, or the twenty-sixth in a year when the twenty-seventh is a Sunday. Pride, whose high point is the weekend of the Canal Parade at the start of August; the house will say which days of the Pride fortnight it counts if you ask. The Amsterdam Dance Event, five nights in the second half of October. The run of days from Christmas to New Year, with New Year's Day inside it. And a large conference week, which moves around the calendar and which the house identifies for you when you give your dates.
Plenty of busy days sit outside that list. Marathon Sunday in October, the evenings of the winter light festival that fall outside the holiday run, Liberation Day on the fifth of May, the canal music festival in August and the weekend the cultural season opens are ordinary dates as far as the deposit is concerned. They can still carry half ahead for other reasons, which come up below, but the date on its own triggers nothing.
Why the date changes when the money moves
An hour given up late on a quiet Wednesday can often be offered to somebody else, because on most evenings someone else in the city is writing for roughly that time. On a peak date that stops being true. The hours are claimed weeks ahead, each one held for a guest is an hour refused to several people who asked after, and an hour released at the last minute usually has nobody left to take it. The woman who kept that evening clear for you has simply lost it.
Asking for half in advance spreads that risk across both sides instead of leaving all of it with her. It is worth being exact about what the half is. It is not an extra charge added to the fee, and it is not a sum held aside to be handed back later. It is the first half of the fee itself, worked out on the figure printed in the profile of the woman you named, and the second half is paid when she arrives. A peak date costs you nothing more; it only brings half of the payment forward.
What the half comes to
Every profile on the roster carries the same table, and no event moves a single figure in it. Seen as halves, the common bookings look like this:
- An hour with one guest at EUR 180 confirms with EUR 90.
- Ninety minutes, at EUR 270, is confirmed by EUR 135.
- Two hours at EUR 360 confirms with EUR 180, and three hours at EUR 540 with EUR 270.
- Two therapists with one guest, like a couple sharing one therapist, runs at EUR 360 an hour, so an hour of either confirms with EUR 180.
- A couple with a therapist each runs at EUR 720 an hour, confirming with EUR 360.
- The eight hour overnight for one guest is EUR 1,250, of which EUR 625 goes ahead.
Every figure is in euro and includes all taxes. Nothing is added for the date, the hour of the night or the distance inside the city.
The half is asked for on six other kinds of booking too
A peak date is one reason among seven, and on an event trip it is often not the first to apply. The other six hold on every day of the year. A booking fixed more than twenty-four hours before it starts. An overnight. Two therapists at once. A room at a Schiphol airport hotel, where the journey time is agreed with you before any hour is fixed. Any session lasting three hours or longer. And a guest's first booking with the house. Someone writing from home three weeks before the Canal Parade therefore pays half for two separate reasons, and would still pay it if the boats never sailed.
There is one booking that carries nothing ahead: a returning client asking on the day for one or two hours at an address in the city. Put that same request on a peak date and it carries half. That is the only case where the date by itself is what makes the difference, and it is why returning clients are the people most often surprised by the rule.
A weekend worked through
Picture a guest who has booked with the house once before, flying in on the Friday of the parade weekend and out again on the Tuesday. On the Friday, writing from home a fortnight earlier for ninety minutes at nine, the guest confirms with EUR 135, because the booking was fixed more than a day ahead. On the Saturday of the boats, deciding at six in the evening that an hour at eleven would round the day off, the guest confirms with EUR 90, because the date is peak, even though the same request would normally be settled at the door. On the Tuesday, with Pride over, a same-day hour at the hotel before the airport is paid in full on arrival, since none of the seven reasons applies.
How far ahead, event by event
King's Day
Two to three weeks is a comfortable lead for the evening itself, and four is sensible if one particular woman is the point of the booking. The eve, King's Night, tends to fill later than people expect, because many visitors land that afternoon and only settle on the night how long they mean to stay out. Pride
Three to four weeks for the parade weekend. The fortnight as a whole is busy, but demand piles up on the Saturday of the boats and the Sunday after, while a Tuesday or Wednesday earlier in Pride is usually straightforward to arrange with a week or so of notice.
The Amsterdam Dance Event
Two to three weeks, bearing in mind that festival visitors often change which night matters once the set times come out. Booking early and then moving the date once, inside the free move described below, is an ordinary pattern for this week rather than a nuisance.
Christmas to New Year
For the thirty-first, four to six weeks, and earlier than that if you want an hour near midnight. For the other days of the run, New Year's Day included, two or three weeks normally does it.
A conference week
This is the one that catches people unprepared, because a work trip rarely feels like an event. If you are in town for a large trade gathering, ask in the first message whether your dates count as peak. The answer arrives in the same reply as the figure and the name.
Paying from another country
Most peak bookings are made from abroad, and many from another time zone. The half goes by card as a first choice, or by Revolut, Wise or cryptocurrency if you prefer, to details given in the thread once the hour is agreed and not published anywhere else. There is no bank transfer and no PayPal. Cash cannot be a deposit for the plain reason that cash only changes hands in the room, after the deposit has done its work. At the door, the balance can be paid in cash in another major currency if that is what is left in your wallet at the end of a trip, once the exact sum in that currency has been confirmed to you in writing before she sets out.
When an event trip changes shape
Trips built around one date change more than most. A flight is rescheduled, a friend drops out, a ticket for Friday turns into a ticket for Saturday. The rules on this site do not tighten for any of that, and they are set out in full on the cancellation page. Cancel with more than twenty-four hours in hand and the whole deposit returns. Cancel inside the final twenty-four hours, before she has left, and half the deposit is kept as fee already earned while the other half is repaid. Cancel once she is on her way and the whole deposit is kept. Should another guest take the released hour, everything is repaid, and if you can show that the house lost less than it kept, it keeps only the smaller amount. No damages are claimed from you beyond that, ever.
Moving is often kinder to your plans than cancelling. One change of date costs nothing when it is asked for more than twenty-four hours before the booked time and the new date falls within fourteen days; the deposit crosses over intact. On an event trip that usually means sliding from the crowded evening to the calmer one after it.
What stays fixed on every peak date
A same-day booking at a central address still brings her to the door forty to sixty minutes after it is confirmed. Schiphol still runs as its own arrangement, with the travel time settled before anything else. Everyone in the room is still twenty-one or over. And the session is still hers: she says at the start what it includes, her limits hold from the first minute to the last, and she may turn a booking down or end a visit whenever she chooses. A big date brings a deposit and a reason to write early. It brings nothing else.
